At Akafuku Honten, visitors can enjoy freshly prepared Akafuku mochi that offers a distinct experience compared to the boxed takeout versions. The dish features tender, trembling mochi harmoniously paired with smooth strained red bean paste, a signature creation praised as something you can only truly appreciate right here. Its tasteful wooden architecture, reflecting a long history dating back to 1707, is enhanced by a bright red lacquered hearth evoking the atmosphere of the Edo period; seated in the raised tatami area, the soothing murmur of the Isuzugawa River reaches your ears. The hospitality is warm, serving hot hojicha or Ise tea, with guests often noting tea was generously poured beyond just their group. In summer, Akafuku Gori appears—a shaved ice treat with matcha syrup concealing mochi and sweet bean paste beneath—while seasonal white and black mochi (Shiromochi Kuromochi) are offered, and Tsuitachi Mochi is available on the first day of each month. Opening at 5:00, it is a reassuring resting spot to drop by before or after paying homage at the shrine.
