Just a short walk from Mishima-Hirokoji Station, Sakuraya has maintained a long history since its founding in 1856. It is an eel specialty shop that prepares eel in the Kanto style by exposing it to Mount Fuji's subterranean water for several days to purge any odor, before steaming and then grilling it. Its signature unaju and unadon feature tender, melt-in-the-mouth flesh with fragrant grill marks, coated in a secret sauce with dialed-back sweetness that seeps down into the rice, accompanied by an elegant liver soup. A single dusting of the aromatic special sansho pepper is famed for sharpening the flavors, and pairing it with umaki (eel omelet) or uzaku (eel and cucumber salad) alongside sake is also highly recommended. The spacious wood-accented interior evokes the atmosphere of a post-town teahouse, and with 80 tatami seating (zashiki) spots, families can relax comfortably. Although it is a popular destination with lines forming before opening, a unique system allowing you to secure a numbered same-day ticket over the phone, along with an air-conditioned waiting area, makes the wait manageable.
