Spicy Indo curry or mellow European-style? A choice that's continued for over 60 years underground in Shimbashi

  • Spicy Indo curry
  • Choice of Indo or European-style curry
  • Half & Half is also popular
  • Wide variety of toppings
  • Long-established, founded in 1958
  • Convenient for a solo lunch
  • Counter-focused 18 seats
  • Short walk from Shimbashi Station

Just a short walk from Shimbashi Station, Karikaru Shimbashi Main Store sits in the basement shopping area of a station-front building that still retains the air of the Showa era. It's a curry stand founded in 1958. The shop's signature offering is two types of curry roux selected from a ticket vending machine: the thin, smooth Indo curry is mild at first bite but the spice builds up gradually afterward, and its generous chunks of chicken, potato, and mushroom have earned support from spice lovers. The thicker, sweeter European-style curry is a welcome option for those who prefer less heat. The Half & Half, which lets you enjoy both in one dish, and the fried egg curry, where you break the soft yolk to change the flavor, are also popular. A variety of toppings such as fried egg and pork cutlet let you customize it to your taste, and some say part of the fun is freely adding the fukujinzuke pickles and fried onions available on the table. The time from handing over your meal ticket to receiving your bowl is short, and the 18-seat counter turns over quickly, making this a fitting spot for a lunch break or an after-work bowl for people working in the area.
