Sumiyaki Unafuji Yurakucho branch is an eel restaurant where you can experience in Tokyo the Kansai-style "jiyaki" grilling method—grilled at high temperature without steaming—passed down from its main store in Nagoya. Using rare blue eel said to be more than 30% larger than ordinary eel, the skin is crisp and the flesh is fluffy. The hitsumabushi, served with chopped eel in a wooden container, lets you experience the Nagoya-style custom of enjoying it in three stages of changing flavor—plain, with condiments, and with dashi broth—while the unaju, generously topped with one to one and a half eels, is also popular. The shiroyaki, where you savor the sweetness of the fat with wasabi or salt, and the kabayaki liver grill, with its sweet sauce and slight bitterness, are signature dishes ordered again and again. The restaurant is located inside Hibiya OKUROJI, a brick-built commercial facility under the elevated tracks, and its hideaway-like presence beyond the noren curtain along with a single-slab wooden table creates a calm atmosphere. All seats are non-smoking, and private rooms are available, making it a choice for business entertaining, anniversaries, and family gatherings.
