Pan no Pelican is a takeout-only shop founded in 1942, known for its bold lineup that carries no savory or sweet filled buns, focusing only on shokupan and roll-type breads. The signature shokupan is surprisingly heavy when held, and is said to have a wheat sweetness that comes through even eaten plain; when cut thick and toasted, the contrast between the crisp outside and the fluffy, chewy inside is highly praised. The small and medium rolls have a firm crust and a chewy interior, and are well regarded for holding up well even when made into sandwiches. The small storefront, with its wine-red exterior and a Pelican illustration, still retains the atmosphere of when it first opened. Depending on the time of day, a line of a dozen or more people can form, but the checkout process moves at a good pace, and staff sometimes take the time to explain the differences in texture between the breads. With an accessible price range of a few hundred yen per loaf, this is a shop chosen both for breakfast and as a gift.
