Tonkatsu Tonki Meguro Honten is a tonkatsu restaurant founded in 1939, preserving its traditions for over 80 years in a standalone building just steps from Meguro Station. Coating the pork multiple times in fine breadcrumbs before frying, its signature specialty is a distinctive texture where the coating gently flakes away from the meat. The loin cutlet (roast-katsu) is light and low in fat, while the tenderloin cutlet (hire-katsu) is praised for its thin, crisp coating and flavorful, tender meat. Set meals (teishoku) come with free refills of rice and shredded cabbage, and extra helpings of pork-rich tonjiru with thick-cut pork are also available, served with attentive staff offering refills just as your bowl gets low. Beyond the plain wood counter lies a completely open kitchen reflecting the philosophy of having "nothing to hide," where watching multiple artisans working in division of labor to fry the cutlets is part of the dining experience. Spanning 70 seats across the 1st and 2nd floors, the entire restaurant is non-smoking. Raised tatami seating (zashiki) private rooms are available with advance reservation, with dinner budgets starting from the ¥2,000 range.
