Ponchiken's hallmark dish is its loin tonkatsu, prepared by gradually raising the heat from a low temperature and finishing at high heat followed by residual warmth. The gently colored cross-section is tender and juicy, celebrated for the sweetness of its fat and a rich umami that blossoms with every chew. The airy, crisp shredded cabbage comes with a free refill / second helping, and one bowl of rice is also free, creating an exceptionally satisfying set meal (teishoku) experience; guests can also enjoy varying flavors with salt, yuzu pepper, tonkatsu sauce, and Taiyo sauce provided at the table. Beyond the specialty, dishes like tonkatsu served with curry in a separate bowl rather than poured over, or thick horse mackerel katsu paired with two kinds of condiments (yakumi), have also garnered a dedicated following. The 19-seat dining area consists solely of table seats and counter seats surrounding the kitchen, exuding a Showa-era charm where calm background music plays and solo guests feel completely comfortable.
