The signature dish of Kyoukarou Honkan is its mapo tofu, which strikes a delightful balance of Sichuan pepper numbness, chili heat, and rich savory umami. Paired with white rice or fried rice, it garners overwhelming support as a dish that keeps chopsticks moving. The other headliner is the handmade knife-cut noodles (daoxiao mian). Irregularly cut thick noodles offer a satisfyingly chewy bite, soaking up a hearty broth loaded with tender beef brisket. The mapo knife-cut noodles, which combine both specialties in one bowl, as well as thick-skinned xiaolongbao and dumplings, are also well-regarded. With heat and numbness indicators clearly marked on the menu, even those sensitive to spicy food can choose dishes with ease. Founded in 2004, this standalone townhouse restaurant spans three floors with 170 seats, accommodating everything from solo counter lunches to family meals in Japanese tatami-style rooms or Western private rooms that can host up to 60 guests, as well as banquets featuring course menus with all-you-can-drink. The entire restaurant is non-smoking, making it an easy stop while strolling along Kanteibyo Street.
