Located in the basement of a shopping arcade near Kichijoji Station, COFFEE HALL Kugutsuso is a kissaten founded in 1979 featuring a cavernous interior built from stone and wood. Its origins trace back to members of an Edo string marionette troupe, with the shop's name said to derive from 'kugutsu-shi' (puppeteer). In an extraordinary dining space lit by warm lamps, guests can savor a rich signature curry simmered for hours. The dish is celebrated for its lingering spiced heat, raisins sprinkled over rice, and generous chunks of ingredients that leave a satisfying impression. The omelet curry topped with a soft-cooked egg, limited to 10 orders per day, and the pleasantly tart homemade rare cheesecake are also popular. For coffee, aged beans matured for over two years are brewed using flannel drip filters, available in strong or soft roasts. Open continuously from 10:00 in the morning until night, it welcomes both solo visitors turning pages in peace and friends chatting between strolls through Kichijoji.
