Just a short walk from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station along the approach leading to Tenmangu shrine, Oshokujidokoro Kasanoya presents a wooden exterior reflecting its origins as an inn founded in 1922 (Taisho 11). The signature Umegae mochi is baked fresh to order and served piping hot. It is acclaimed for its fragrant, crispy exterior, soft and chewy bite, and the refined, lingering sweetness of its smooth red bean paste that is never overly rich. Through the glass storefront, you can watch the process of baking the mochi, which makes waiting in line part of the experience. The eat-in space in the back features tables and floor-cushion seating, along with self-service dispensers for tea and cold water, offering a peaceful place to settle down away from the bustle of the approach. Despite being a popular spot with frequent queues, the turnover is fast, and the convenience of being able to order from just one piece is a welcome perk.
