Situated about a 10-minute walk from Kamakura Station in a peaceful residential neighborhood, Chabo Unmo is a standalone Japanese sweets teahouse. Its signature specialty is extra-large shiratama rice flour dumplings, shaped and boiled only after each order is placed. About the size of ping-pong balls, their chewy bounce and gently warm, freshly prepared texture draw countless visitors. Anmitsu bowls featuring both plain and matcha-infused shiratama can be enjoyed with matcha syrup, kuromitsu brown sugar syrup, smooth red bean paste, and agar jelly, while the shiratama fruit cream anmitsu—topped with generous fruit and vanilla ice cream—offers great volume. In summer, seasonal shaved ice soaked in syrup over coarsely shaved ice also joins the menu. The serene Japanese interior warmed by wood offers 28 seats, while the 4 terrace seats facing the garden welcome pets. Though lines form daily, the considerate staff—who take orders in advance while guests wait—is well loved, making this a spot worth stopping by during a stroll through Kamakura.
