  • Long-established eatery dating back to the Meiji era

Just a short walk from Minami-Senju Station, Obana is an eel specialty restaurant marked by its traditional noren curtain at the entrance of a freestanding house. Prepared only after each order is received—filleted, thoroughly steamed, and grilled—their Kanto-style unaju is the signature specialty, revered for its exquisite balance of melt-in-your-mouth tender eel that can be cut with chopsticks, fragrant sauce, and slightly firm rice. The eel-focused menu features crisp and fragrant shirayaki, generously sized umaki wrapping rich flavor in fluffy rolled omelet, uzaku tossed with cucumber, and kimosui soup accented with shiitake mushrooms and mitsuba. The Japanese interior with tables set on tatami mats provides a tranquil setting, ideal for enjoying a meal over sake with acquaintances and friends. Although the price range is on the higher side, many say its authentic taste is well worth waiting in line for. The restaurant accepts no reservations, seats guests on a first-come, first-served basis, and closes once the eel runs out, making it wise to plan your visit with queue times in mind.
