Established in 1952 just moments from Gakugei-daigaku Station, MATTERHORN is a classic Western confectionery shop that has remained a single beloved store handed down across generations without opening any branches. Its signature creation is the Damier, an eye-catching checkerboard buttercream cake whose nostalgic flavor blends the richness of Calpis butter and decadent chocolate, cherished across generations. The moist, smooth Baumkuchen and summer-exclusive Mocha Soft serve are also popular, sometimes selling out early in the day. The cakes are reasonably priced, and shelf-stable baked goods like leaf pies and madeleines make wonderful souvenirs. Decorated with marble-textured pillars and paintings by artist Shintaro Suzuki, the Showa-retro tearoom is completely non-smoking and offers counter seats, making it an easy and welcoming stop for solo visitors.
