A Kyoto machiya where you can savor homemade warabimochi made from 100% bracken starch while gazing at the willow trees and the gentle Shirakawa stream

  • 100% bracken starch warabimochi
  • Signature warabimochi parfait
  • Uji Kintoki shaved ice in summer
  • Fragrant bowl of matcha
  • Rest in tatami seating (zashiki)
  • Views along the Shirakawa canal
  • Ideal break during sightseeing
  • Great for outings with friends or dates

Standing quietly along Gion's Shirakawa canal amid weeping willows and flowing water, Gion Komori is a sweets cafe that makes use of a former ochaya tea house building located in an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Guests take off their shoes before entering the tatami seating (zashiki), where quiet moments pass while looking out onto the courtyard garden, and the Showa-retro interior decorated with rotary phones and vintage furnishings brings a sense of nostalgia. The signature offering is their homemade warabimochi, kneaded fresh every morning with 100% bracken starch and zero added starch, prized for its smooth, stretchy texture and exceptional pairing with black sugar syrup and roasted soybean powder. The warabimochi parfait—layered with matcha ice cream, warabimochi, matcha chiffon cake, and chestnuts—is also popular, and in summer many come seeking the rich matcha shaved ice. No reservations are accepted, so there may be a wait, but it is an ideal spot to pause during sightseeing or enjoy sweet treats with friends while soaking in Kyoto's timeless scenery.
