Rich pork-bone and seafood broth surging with fish powder and spice: meet the famous Karakarauo in an underground food hall

  • Famous for Karakarauo ramen
  • Rich tsukemen as dual signature
  • Selectable spice levels
  • Finishing soup-wari is popular
  • Popular spot with inevitable lines
  • Great for solo lunch
  • Underground right by Shakujii-koen Station
  • 12 counter seats, entirely non-smoking

The shop's signature is Karakarauo, layered with fish powder and fiery spice over a rich tonkotsu-seafood broth, and Mendokoro Inosho is renowned nationwide as its originator. Its two main pillars are the ramen, which keeps your chopsticks moving even as you sweat, and the tsukemen, where thick, rich dipping broth clings to slightly sweet noodles. You can adjust the spiciness from mild to extra spicy, making it welcoming for both chili enthusiasts and first-timers. The non-spicy standard tsukemen and the gently rich chuka soba are also popular, with many diners adding a pork rice bowl available in several flavor choices. Diluting the remaining dipping broth with hot soup at the end for a refreshing finish is another unique way to enjoy the meal. Set along a 12-seat U-shaped counter in an underground dining alley retaining a retro Showa-era atmosphere, just a short walk from Shakujii-koen Station, it has a reputation for quick turnover despite inevitable lines. All seats are non-smoking, making it an easy spot for solo diners to drop by.
