Renowned for its unaju so tender it falls apart at the touch of chopsticks, Nodaiwa V, Azabu-Iikura Honten is a historic unagi establishment located in Higashi-Azabu near Akabanebashi Station at the foot of Tokyo Tower. It is celebrated for its fluffy texture and refined, subtly sweet sauce created through repeated steaming and grilling in the classic Edomae style, using wild and farmed eel depending on the season. The à la carte menu includes shirayaki enjoyed with salt and wasabi, dashi-rich nikogori (jellied eel broth), and piping hot umaki (eel rolled in omelet), along with a palate-cleansing grated daikon radish that reflects the thoughtful touch of a long-standing establishment. The wooden standalone building, relocated from a gassho-zukuri folk house in Hida-Takayama, exudes Edo atmosphere through its exposed beams and pillars, offering table seats as well as tatami seating (zashiki) and private rooms suitable for gatherings and entertaining guests.
