Walking from Sangenjaya Station along Route 246 toward Shibuya brings you to Menwasho, an understated shop without prominent signage known for its signature rich double broth combining dried sardines and animal stock. With a clean aftertaste, the soup clings well to flat, medium-thick curly noodles, while a layer of lard on the surface keeps the large bowl piping hot until the very end. The toppings also have an excellent reputation: large rolled pork belly chashu so tender it falls apart when lifted with chopsticks, soft-boiled seasoned eggs with runny yolks, and plenty of bamboo shoots, all available as reasonably priced extras. Many diners finish the richly flavored seafood tsukemen down to the last drop by adding soup stock (soup-wari). In a small space with 6 counter seats and table seating where the owner carefully prepares each bowl, calm jazz plays in the background, and all seats are non-smoking, making it an easy stop for solo diners.
