Located in Oku-Asakusa along Kototoi-dori, behind Sensoji Temple, Susukien Asakusa Main Store is a gelato stand run by Shokoku Meicha, a wholesaler dealing in Japanese tea leaves. Their signature item is matcha gelato, which lets you choose the intensity of matcha from No.1 to No.7. The strongest, No.7, has reduced sweetness and is known for delivering the umami and bitterness of matcha itself as if you were tasting the tea leaves directly. Many enjoy starting with an easier-to-eat middle number and comparing intensities to find their preference, and the double flavor combining refreshing hojicha or black sesame with its salty aftertaste is also popular. They also offer matcha-an dango, which lets you enjoy four levels of matcha bean paste along with sencha, and a single serving comes in under ¥1,000, making it easy to stop by. The shop is busy with domestic and international tourists, but turnover is quick, and after purchasing you enjoy your gelato at bench seating on the second floor, making it a good spot for a break in an entirely non-smoking space on your way back from visiting Sensoji Temple.
