Just a short walk from JR Nagahama Station, YOKAROU is a standalone regional cuisine restaurant blending into the streetscape of Kurokabe Square. Its signature dish is the famous Kohoku specialty, yakisaba somen. The mackerel, simmered for several days in a sweet and savory sauce, is tender down to the bones. Mingled with the somen that has absorbed the cooking broth, the savory umami condenses, allowing you to enjoy every bite to the end while changing the flavor with sansho pepper or yuzu shichimi. Many diners share a set with thick grilled mackerel sushi layered with green shiso and ginger, while local Kohoku touches like red konnyaku dengaku add color to the table. The building, renovated from a 150- to 200-year-old merchant house, retains its courtyard garden, veranda, and antique furnishings. The tatami seating (zashiki), where guests remove their shoes upon entering, offers 70 seats, all non-smoking. While lines form on many days, service is quick once seated, and the attentive hospitality earns high praise for an enjoyable visit. As payment is cash only, be sure to prepare cash before visiting.
