Unrinbo Akihabara's signature dishes are its two tantanmen offerings: a soup-based tantanmen where sesame flavor meets layered spiciness and numbing heat, and a soup-less tantanmen where whole-wheat thick noodles are tossed generously with peanuts and sesame. Since you can choose both spiciness and numbing heat separately in 5 stages when ordering, even first-time visitors can find a bowl suited to their taste. The mapo tofu and mapo don, seasoned with the savory richness of doubanjiang and Sichuan pepper, pair wonderfully with rice, and the set that lets you enjoy both mapo dishes and tantanmen together is a popular standard choice. Known as a sister restaurant to a Chinese restaurant in Awajicho, it offers authentic Sichuan flavors in a casual setting, and the speed of service – with bowls arriving just minutes after ordering – is a welcome touch during busy lunchtimes. Seating is limited to just 10 counter seats, the whole restaurant is non-smoking, and thanks to its location just steps from Iwamotocho Station, lines are a constant sight during lunchtime at this popular spot.
