Kannana Tosakko Ramen, marked by its red signboard and red lantern near the west exit of Ikebukuro Station, carries on the seaburi-chatcha style that flourished along Kannana Avenue. The soy-based tonkotsu soup is loaded with back fat yet never feels heavy, its sweetness and richness clinging to the curly noodles in a way that goes down smoothly and has earned a strong reputation. The negi chashu men, topped with spicy white negi, is also popular. The homemade gyoza, flavored with chives and garlic, is said to hold its own against the ramen. The weekday Maru-toku set, available until 15:00, is a treat too, coming with fried rice and gyoza for around ¥1,000. The well-worn tables give the interior the feel of a classic town Chinese diner, and it stays lively past midnight with customers stopping in after drinking. The whole place is non-smoking, making it easy to visit alone. Payment is cash only, so be sure to bring some.
