Nestled in an alley of Yokohama Chinatown, Goku Chasou is a Chinese tea specialty shop where guests can pick out tea leaves and teaware on the 1st floor and savor a freshly brewed cup in the retro tearoom on the 2nd floor. The signature Goku Babao tea is a gorgeous cup featuring floating jujubes, chrysanthemums, and goji berries, with the gentle sweetness of rock sugar evolving with each subsequent steep. The Baobao tea blended with roses offers a clean aftertaste, earning praise as being easy to drink even for those new to Chinese tea. Staff members brew the first steep directly in front of guests while explaining the tea leaves and aroma, and patrons can continue refilling from a kettle of hot water to follow the changing flavors. Sweet treats with subdued sweetness, such as the Dunhuang parfait layered with grass jelly and tapioca, as well as glutinous rice balls filled with black sesame paste, are well-liked for being light enough to enjoy comfortably even after sampling street food. The spacious seating is surrounded by antique furnishings, and on certain days live erhu or pipa performances take place. Featuring 30 entirely non-smoking seats, it is an ideal spot to take a relaxing break during a stroll through Chinatown with family or friends.
