Frying kushikatsu in Shinsekai since its founding in 1929, Gansu Kushikatsu Daruma Shinsekai So-honten is beloved as the originator of kushikatsu culture. Its signature kushikatsu features a light, crispy, thin batter that seals in the savory flavors of the ingredients, earning a reputation for being so easy to eat that you can enjoy skewer after skewer. Each skewer offers something different, from doteyaki with tender beef sinew simmered in sweet dashi (Japanese soup stock) to naturally sweet wild shrimp, tangy pickled red ginger, and melty cheese. This is also where the nationwide rule of "no double dipping in the sauce" originated, and the intimate 12-seat counter puts you shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow diners. With freshly fried skewers served promptly after ordering, it is an ideal spot for a quick drink while sightseeing at Tsutenkaku or for casual daytime drinking.
