Zaigoudon Honke Waraya is an udon shop in a thatched-roof traditional folk house located right at the entrance of the open-air museum Shikoku Mura at the foot of Yashima. The building, relocated from an Edo-period private home, features high ceilings with exposed beams that create an open atmosphere, along with a water wheel spinning in the garden, giving it the rustic charm of a folk tale scene. The signature dish is kamaage udon. Guests follow a unique custom of pouring the piping-hot dipping dashi (Japanese soup stock) from a large tokkuri (sake flask) into their own cups, enjoying the aroma of dried sardines and kelp that pairs exceptionally well with the noodles—smooth on the outside with a firm core. Servings for 2 or more arrive in a large wooden tub, making sharing with family or friends a festive treat. Fluffy, thick-battered chicken tempura, shrimp tempura, and inari sushi with sweet and savory seasoned fried tofu are also popular side dishes. The welcoming staff kindly explain how to pour the dashi, and with 160 seats and parking for around 200 cars, it is convenient to visit even during a drive.
