Standing on Platforms 1 and 2 of JR Abiko Station, Yaoken No. 5 is a standing soba shop that has preserved its Showa-era atmosphere since 1967. Its signature dish is karaage soba, topped with a piece of fried chicken so gigantic it hides the bowl beneath it; diners love the classic way the crispy batter soaks up the broth to become even more savory as it is savored together with the noodles. With the speed of getting your bowl immediately after buying a ticket from the vending machine, standing soba allows you to finish your meal during the short wait for a train while the departure bells ring across the platform. Since you can also order karaage à la carte or for takeout, some customers come just to buy the chicken without ordering soba. The interior features photos and messages associated with artist Kiyoshi Yamashita, making it a destination for station soba enthusiasts from afar. Open from 7:00 in the morning, another great appeal is enjoying a hearty, filling bowl for under ¥1,000.
