Standing as a standalone building along Kaigan-dori east of Onomichi Station, Ichibankan is a popular Onomichi ramen spot where lines constantly form for its signature kakuni ramen. The generous portion of pork kakuni is simmered until tender and falling apart, lending depth and richness to a soy sauce broth combining chicken and pork stock with Setouchi small-fish dashi. Many diners note that the pork back fat is surprisingly light, making the soup easy to finish to the last drop, and some enjoy it in a set with juicy gyoza or a soft-boiled seasoned egg. Even with a queue, table turnover is fast and orders are served quickly, making it convenient to drop by between touring local attractions. All 33 seats, including 7 counter seats, are non-smoking, and the view of Mukaijima from the terrace seating is another praised feature.
