Founded in 1915, Meiji Tei Komagane Honten has long been beloved as a representative restaurant for Komagane's famous sauce katsudon. The signature loin sauce katsudon features thick-cut pork loin coated in crispy breading and dressed with a sweet, rich, yet not overly heavy homemade sauce. Eating it Komagane-style, mouthfuls taken with the mountain of shredded cabbage so generous the bowl lid cannot close, is a true pleasure. Guests can also choose lean tenderloin, large fried shrimp, thick-cut horse meat sashimi that makes a refreshing palate cleanser, or sets with Shinshu soba, while ginger-infused miso soup cleanses the finish. The standalone building mixes Japanese and Western styles, offering counter, tatami seating, and sofa seating, is completely non-smoking, and has parking for 40 vehicles, attracting many travelers returning from hiking in the Central Alps or sightseeing. Although lines form before opening on holidays due to its popularity, many praise the swift service and polite seating, making it comfortable for families to visit.
