A Showa-era eatery pairing rich tonkotsu-soy broth with bone marrow grit, thick noodles, and melt-in-the-mouth chashu

  • Rich tonkotsu-soy sauce Chinese noodles
  • Melt-in-the-mouth pork belly chashu
  • Thick noodles can be changed to thin noodles
  • Secretly popular curry udon
  • Historic eatery founded in 1953
  • Great for solo lunches
  • Nostalgic Showa-retro storefront
  • Parking available for 5 cars

Located a few minutes' walk from Wakayamashi Station in a detached house hung with a Showa-style noren curtain, Yamatame Shokudo has been operating since 1953 and is celebrated for its tonkotsu-soy sauce broth simmered so rich that bone powder settles at the bottom of the bowl. Medium-thick straight noodles, uncommon for Wakayama ramen, coat well with the hearty soup, and diners can also request thin noodles when ordering. The pork belly chashu is tender enough to fall apart when lifted with chopsticks and comes in generous slices, earning praise for the way the sweetness of fat and savory seasoning melt into the deep broth. Originally established as an udon eatery, the restaurant maintains a diverse selection of udon, with some guests visiting specifically for the thick curry udon. With 27 seats across counter and table seating, the shop is completely non-smoking, welcomes children, and provides parking. Operating continuously from 11:00 to 17:00, visiting outside the midday lunch peak is also recommended for a more leisurely meal.
