The signature item of Toranomon Okanoeisen is its mame daifuku, featuring thin, soft mochi seasoned with savory red peas that bring out the refined sweetness of the smooth red bean paste, creating a satisfying, substantial treat that has long been cherished. Founded in the first year of the Taisho era as an offshoot of the Asakusa-Komagata lineage, the shop is said to preserve traditional techniques, using rice from Miyagi and azuki and red peas from Hokkaido while kneading bean paste from early morning. The lineup is extensive, including chestnut manju encasing an entire large chestnut, moist and smooth joyo manju kneaded with yam, and seasonal mizu-yokan, with longer-lasting sweets also serving as popular gifts. Amid ongoing redevelopment in the surrounding area, its storefront with wooden eaves and shop curtain leaves a memorable impression, operating as a takeout-only counter where items are selected through a display case. With several staff members greeting and serving customers swiftly, it is an easy place to casually drop by alone on the way home from work.
