Just a short walk from Keisei-Ueno Station beyond the lively buzz of Ameyoko, RENKON is an izakaya specializing in lotus root that opened in 1998 in a standalone building. Its signature dish is deep-fried thick lotus root slices sandwiching plump shrimp, highly praised for the contrast between its crisp texture and the fragrant aroma of shiso leaves. Offering over 20 varieties of dishes prepared with different cuts and cooking techniques, highlights include karashi RENKON made mild with homemade mustard miso, and fried lotus root that is simultaneously crispy and fluffy. Its appeal also lies in its culinary breadth, which includes creative plates like steamed lotus root dumplings paired with scallops and lotus root gnocchi, alongside fresh sashimi platters and softshell turtle dishes. The 3-story building incorporates old wood from around 170 years ago to evoke Taisho and Showa-era romance, offering counter seats, horigotatsu (sunken table seating), and private rooms for 2 to more than 30 guests. Course meals with all-you-can-drink are popular for their value, and as this is a sought-after restaurant, booking early is recommended for weekends.
