Kaeru Shokudo, known for its signature mixed curry simmered generously with chicken drumsticks and vegetables, is a curry specialty shop tucked quietly into a peaceful residential area of Kanamecho. The roux, combining chicken bone soup stock, onions, and spices, follows its own smooth style that fits neither Indian nor European curry categories, and it is also known for pairing well with rice seasoned with ginger and garlic. The chicken drumsticks are tender enough that even the cartilage falls apart, and the lineup also includes distinctive options such as a black tantan curry with tingling Sichuan pepper. It is customary to be encouraged to squeeze lemon over the dish partway through eating, and it's enjoyable how the tartness changes the character of the dish. Inside the shop, which has only seven counter seats, large and small frog figurines are lined up, and the attentive hospitality of the couple who run it makes it comfortable to visit alone. For dessert, there's a sundae layering homemade chiffon cake and caramel ice cream.
