Just a short walk from Koenji Station, tucked quietly into a back alley off the shopping street, Tokoi is a Musashino udon specialty restaurant with only 8 counter seats. Its signature dish is nikujiru tsuke udon, pairing extra-thick handmade noodles with a rich soy sauce-based dashi dipping broth infused with branded pork, scallions, and deep-fried tofu, creating a bowl where you scoop up the flavorful broth with noodles that exude the scent of wheat as you chew. Using the meal ticket machine, it is fun to choose your preferred style, from extra-thick to thin noodles or limited-edition himokawa, served cold or hot, as well as the spice level. There is also a rich variety of dipping broths, including a country-style broth with mushrooms and fried eggplant, a wakame and mekabu seaweed broth, and a sweet and spicy meat broth. Even the regular portion is satisfyingly filling, and many customers find the price—keeping within ¥1,000—well worth it. The atmosphere of watching the artisan quietly knead and boil noodles right in front of you makes it perfect for days when you want to dine alone and focus on your meal. Finishing the meal by diluting the remaining dipping broth with udon cooking water to drink it up is also a beloved tradition unique to this shop.
