Founded in 1576 at Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto and opening a branch in Ningyocho in 1954, Gyokueido Hikokuro is a Japanese confectionery shop carrying on over 450 years of history. Its signature sweet is Torayaki, which reveals a tiger-striped pattern when the thin paper is peeled away, earning enduring support as an elegant dorayaki that brings together an airy, fluffy hand-baked crust with moderately sweet chunky bean paste made from Hokkaido Dainagon azuki beans. Adhering to a handmade process that takes 4 days to complete the bean paste, the shop is also celebrated for Gyokuman, featuring layers of chestnut and several types of bean paste, and chewy warabimochi finished simply with roasted soybean flour. Nestled on a corner along Amazake Yokocho, its neatly arranged showcase is lovely, accompanied by pleasant, attentive service offering tips on how to slice the sweets. As it is a takeout-only shop with no eat-in area, it is easy to stop by during a stroll around Ningyocho or when choosing souvenirs.
