A hidden alleyway gem where lines form for stone-milled, house-ground soba and a bowl that changes with the seasons

  • Summer's signature dish is sudachi soba
  • House-ground soba milled with a stone mill
  • Seasonal soba with matsutake mushrooms or oysters
  • Shrimp tempura also popular
  • A popular restaurant with lines forming
  • Also suited to solo diners for soba-mae drinks
  • Hidden gem location in a back alley
  • Fully non-smoking Japanese-style space

Set back in an inconspicuous alley just off the Nishi-Azabu intersection, Osobanokouga serves fragrant, freshly made soba ground in-house on a stone mill, using soba buckwheat delivered from a farm in Saitama. The owner, who trained for many years at a long-established shop, brings his dedication to each tray of soba, and the basic mori soba, which lets you taste the aroma and firm texture directly, is supported by regulars. In summer, sudachi soba fills the bowl with the fragrance of sudachi citrus; in autumn, matsutake mushrooms are enjoyed in an elegant bonito dashi; and in winter, soba is topped with lightly fried oysters — these seasonal limited menus are a reason to visit, along with the pleasure of adding shrimp tempura or corn kakiage. With a total of 17 seats combining a wood-grain counter and tables, the space is a calm Japanese setting that is entirely non-smoking, and the attentive service led by the young proprietress is also well regarded. It suits both a solo diner enjoying soba-mae drinks and a meal with close company.
