Founded in 1926 as Oita Prefecture's very first restaurant, Restaurant Toyoken is a long-established eatery in Beppu known as the originator of Oita's famous toriten (chicken tempura). Its signature original toriten consists of chicken seasoned with soy sauce and garlic, wrapped in a light, crispy batter, traditionally enjoyed refreshingly with original kabosu vinegar soy sauce and mustard. The yuzu toriten, lightly flavored with salt and subtle yuzu aroma, is also popular, and authentic Chinese dishes like gyoza, shark fin soup, and mapo tofu are well-received too. The spacious 100-seat interior features table seats, raised tatami seating, and private rooms with either chairs or tatami seating; with 60 parking spaces and barrier-free access, it is welcoming for families. The bright dining area decorated with early Showa-era historical items and the warm hospitality of staff who guide guests from the parking lot to their seats are reasons this popular venue continues to draw long lines.
