Known as the birthplace of bukkake udon, Yamashita Udon is a long-standing self-service udon shop founded in 1981 in Zentsuji City. Made using foot-kneading methods and hand-cut into irregular strands, the noodles boast a firm bite and springy texture, catching the rich dashi infused with dried sardines and kelp. Squeezing lemon over the bowl yields a refreshing finish, enjoyable either cold or warm. The niku bukkake topped with sweet-savory simmered beef and the mild, gentle kake udon are also popular choices. Pairing them with freshly fried chikuwa tempura, mixed vegetable kakiage tempura, or dashi-soaked oden like fish paste cakes and burdock root tempura is standard practice. With 68 seats combining counter, table, and tatami seating (zashiki), the spacious interior is lively with locals, and its self-service format keeps turnover fast and wait times short. Open continuously from 9:30 to 16:00 with parking for 50 cars, it is a dependable stop on any udon tour.
