Nestled in a back alley of Tenjin, Fukuoka, the standalone eatery Makoto Restaurant does not even place a menu on the table for lunch, offering only a grilled mackerel set meal (teishoku). Once you take a seat, a large piece of mackerel boldly grilled over charcoal is served steaming hot. Boasting aromatic crispy skin and plump, fatty flesh, this signature dish is acclaimed as irresistible when paired with grated daikon and soy sauce. It comes with sweet miso soup filled with deep-fried tofu, alongside small side dishes (kobachi) of chilled tofu and pickles, and rice refills are free, earning high praise for its incredible satisfaction at a ¥1,000-level price. Customers line up even before opening for this unchanged taste since its founding in 1973, and the efficient, fast-paced service is pleasant. Featuring 30 seats centered around the counter, the entire restaurant is non-smoking and includes tatami seating (zashiki) on the 2nd floor, making it an easy stop for a solo lunch or during travels around Fukuoka.
