Hakata Ajidokoro Sukiyaki & Mizutaki Iroha is a long-established restaurant that has been serving mizutaki hot pot in Hakata since its founding in 1953. The classic tradition begins by sipping the cloudy red chicken soup from a teacup, flavored with a dash of salt or yuzukosho. Bone-in chicken is tender and falls apart easily, while the homemade chicken meatballs, shaped and dropped into the broth right before your eyes by the staff, are so fluffy they famously inspire extra orders. Diners can also enjoy slightly sweet homemade ponzu made with Hagi mandarins, along with Hakata-style à la carte dishes like Kumamoto horse meat sashimi and mentaiko. To finish, savor the rich flavors of chicken and vegetables with either zosui rice porridge or champon noodles. Autograph boards blanketing the walls tell of its storied history, and the downtown energetic atmosphere features private rooms accommodating from 4 to over 30 guests, as well as horigotatsu (sunken table seating) tatami seating (zashiki), making it versatile for an evening of travel, banquets, or formal meals.
