Famous for its signature Takato soba—eaten by using an entire long green onion as chopsticks and biting into it while slurping the noodles—Misawaya is a detached soba restaurant housed in a thatched-roof folk dwelling in Ouchi-juku. Generously topped with grated daikon radish and bonito flakes over cold 100% buckwheat noodles, it is popular for how the sharpness and sweetness of the scallion provide a flavor accent; the restaurant is well-known as the originator of this unique style of eating. Freshly fried assorted tempura, kozuyu made with carefully extracted dashi, and herring pickled with sansho pepper provide a taste of Aizu regional cuisine that can be leisurely enjoyed with Japanese sake. The tatami seating area retaining thick beams and an irori hearth is spacious, allowing guests to savor seasonal charms at kotatsu tables in winter and open veranda seats in summer. As a popular establishment, waiting times are common, but a ticketing machine and notification system allow visitors to spend their wait strolling around the post town.
