The signature dish of Toshima Iidabashi is the original thick-cut pork belly soba, topped with a slow-simmered, extra-thick slice of pork belly that almost covers the entire bowl. The meat is so tender it falls apart with chopsticks, pairing nicely with the jet-black Kanto-style broth enriched with sweetness and dashi (Japanese soup stock). Dropping an egg into the broth is said to make the flavor even richer. During summer, the chilled pork soba with a crisp saltiness and tempura soba topped with a large mixed tempura that soaks up the broth are also popular; some regular customers have visited for years specifically for the pork udon in rich black dashi. With only 5 standing counter seats and no ticket machine or chairs, the shop retains a Showa-era charm where you order verbally and pay with cash. Serving orders quickly after they are placed is another reason for its loyal following. Open from 6:30, it is a reassuring bowl before work, after a night shift, or for a quick solo lunch during busy hours.
