Known for its signature duck roast, Akagakiya is an izakaya founded in 1949 that richly retains the atmosphere of the Showa era. The duck roast, cooked to exquisite perfection, is moist and tender, with a rich special sauce and mustard enhancing the meat's savory flavor. Daikon radish and eggs simmered slowly in the oden pot right before your eyes are thoroughly steeped in dashi (Japanese soup stock), bringing an exceptional sense of bliss when enjoyed with hot sake. There is also an abundant variety of Kyoto-style à la carte dishes that pair wonderfully with alcohol, such as shimesaba enjoyed refreshingly with condiments (yakumi) and dashi vinegar, or rich freshly scooped yuba. At the counter seats illuminated by bare lightbulbs or the raised tatami seating (zashiki) extending into the back, you can comfortably enjoy evening conversations or drinking solo. With a reasonable budget in the ¥3,000 range, it is an acclaimed establishment where you can truly appreciate why it has long been loved by so many drinkers.
