Founded in 1950, Hosakaya is a long-standing eel izakaya beloved in Jiyugaoka. The specialty karakuri-yaki features eel meat wrapped around skewers and grilled to aromatic perfection, pairing a crispy surface texture and rich savory fat with a sweet-and-savory tare sauce. The full skewer assortment, which includes various cuts such as liver (kimo-yaki), refreshing salt-grilled pieces, and rare fin (hire-yaki), is popular as an ideal accompaniment to drinks. At lunchtime, the unadon—featuring fluffy, tender kabayaki with a light tare sauce coating the rice—earns high praise. At the 15-seat U-shaped counter evoking Showa-era nostalgia, you can easily enjoy daytime drinking or drinking alone while watching skillful craftsmanship right before your eyes. In the evening, the ability to savor piping-hot eel skewers grilled quickly at an affordable budget in the ¥2,000 range is another great appeal.
