Situated in Koishikawa, Bunkyo Ward, Watabe is an eel specialty restaurant where you can savor the charcoal-grilled aroma and tender, fluffy texture of unagi. The signature unaju is prepared in the Kanto style, meticulously steamed to order before being charcoal-grilled; the eel becomes so tender it falls apart with chopsticks, pairing perfectly with a sharp sauce passed down since its founding. Another favorite is the signature Enma-ju, lavishly topped with both kabayaki and shirayaki eel, which can be enjoyed with various condiments (yakumi) and then finished hitsumabushi-style by pouring in dashi (Japanese soup stock). Drawing on their sharp discernment as a former fishmonger, they also offer an abundance of fresh sashimi such as Pacific bluefin tuna, plump eel liver dishes, and à la carte dishes ideal for pairing with drinks.
