Savor huge shrimp tempura that spills over the bowl at a long-established shop steeped in Edo atmosphere

  • Hearty signature tempura soba
  • Extra-large tendon whose lid cannot close
  • Soba miso, perfect to pair with sake
  • Ideal for a meal while sightseeing or strolling in Asakusa
  • Relaxing tatami seating on the 2nd floor
  • Long-established Edomae shop founded in 1860

Founded in 1860, Owariya is a long-established soba shop that has long been cherished in Asakusa, preserving the flavors and traditions of Edomae. Its signature dish, tempura soba, features 2 huge pieces of shrimp tempura that spill over the bowl, where the crispy batter fried in custom-ordered sesame oil meets the refreshing aroma of bonito dashi (Japanese soup stock) and yuzu. The tendon, boasting a generous volume that prevents the box lid from closing, and the ten seiro, made with smooth, thin soba noodles, are also enduringly popular. Another stylish way to enjoy the meal is to sip sake alongside soba miso, which offers a delightful texture from the crunchy buckwheat groats, before slurping the noodles. In addition to table seats, the interior offers tatami seating (zashiki), filled with the lively spirit of Edo and providing a comfortable break during a stroll through Asakusa.
