Boasting a history dating back to its founding in 1596, Chojiya is a long-established shop that has been cherished by travelers in Mariko, a former post town along the Tokaido. Its signature dish, tororo-jiru, is made by carefully grating native Shizuoka Japanese wild yam with its skin on and blending it with homemade white miso and fragrant bonito dashi (Japanese soup stock). Spooning this grated yam generously over barley rice served in a wooden tub and eating it briskly fills the mouth with rich, wholesome savoriness. The à la carte dishes supporting the menu are also extensive, including okabe-age made by combining tofu with mountain yam, as well as Shizuoka's specialty fried kuro-hanpen. Inside the shop, enhanced by the charm of a thatched roof, ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige are displayed, allowing you to relax and enjoy your meal while soaking in the atmosphere of the Edo period. Featuring spacious tatami seating (zashiki) and a large parking lot, it is also very convenient for sightseeing stops and family gatherings.
