The specialty of Mikuniichi Nishiguchi Store is the original Japanese salad udon, generously piled with lettuce, cucumber, tomato, broccoli, and egg to the point of concealing the noodles, offering a contrast between crisp vegetables and chewy thick noodles. Established in 1969, this spot is celebrated as the pioneer of salad udon. Its handmade noodles, delivered twice a day, have varied thicknesses and a firm, bouncy chew. The red miso nikomi udon, served piping hot in rich red miso dashi (Japanese soup stock), is another signature dish favored during cold seasons. At midday, a lunch-only special set comes with a choice of salad or rice, and the speedy service shortly after ordering makes it very convenient for office workers. The warm wooden interior is filled with the sounds of koto music, and this spacious 2-story venue with 135 seats includes horigotatsu (sunken table seating) private rooms. In the evening, it can also be used for a light drink with beer and à la carte dishes before finishing with udon.
