Just a short walk from Jimbocho Station, Udon Noodle Shop Maruka is a Sanuki udon shop with constant queues during lunchtime. The owner trained at the famous Yamagoe Udon in Ayagawa Town, Kagawa Prefecture. Their kake udon, combining clear dried sardine dashi (Japanese soup stock) with springy noodles, is acclaimed as the dish that most purely showcases the shop's true skill. Slurping it as hiyakake (chilled) is also delightful, and many are said to drink up every drop of dashi. There is endless fun in choosing combinations, such as kamatama pairing piping-hot noodles with raw egg, chikuwa fish cake tempura with daily changing fillings, and pepper-seasoned chicken tempura served with both thigh and breast cuts. Close to the steam of the boiling area and the deft hands of the artisans, the 26-seat interior mainly features facing counters and tables; many customers are amazed by how remarkably smooth seating and serving are even with a queue. The shop is completely non-smoking, reservations are not accepted, and payment is cash only, so keep these points in mind when visiting.
