The signature dish at Menya Hyottoko Kotsu Kaikan is the Japanese-style yuzu yanagimen, featuring a clear Japanese-style dashi soup topped with a generous amount of grated yuzu. The popular way to enjoy it is to first taste the pure umami of chicken, seafood, and kombu, then dissolve the yuzu partway through to enjoy the changing aroma. The thick pork belly chashu, large enough to span across the bowl, is so tender it falls apart with chopsticks, and is praised as a signature topping for its rich, sweet fat. There is also a version without yuzu, the Japanese-style yanagimen, for those who want to taste the dashi directly, along with supporting items such as crunchy menma and chagohan (tea-infused rice) that can be turned into a chazuke-style dish by pouring the soup over it. Located in the basement of Tokyo Kotsu Kaikan, the small space has only an L-shaped counter with 7 seats, with the kitchen right in front of you, giving it an atmosphere that combines the intimacy of a street stall with cleanliness. Lines often form right after opening, but turnover is fast, and thanks to its Yurakucho location, prices in the evening can be enjoyed for under ¥1,000.
