Standing quietly in the middle of rice fields down a narrow country road, Sanuki Udon Gamou Udon is a standalone shop founded in 1957. Its signature kake udon is renowned for its clear broth filled with the aroma of dried sardines, balanced with sweetness and a pleasant aftertaste that leads many customers to drink every last drop. The noodles offer both a firm chewiness and a bouncy texture, along with the gentle sweetness of wheat. The self-service style involves choosing the noodle portion and whether you want them hot or cold, picking out toppings like the large triangular fried tofu soaked in broth or freshly fried chikuwa tempura, and finally pouring the broth and scallions yourself. Although the queue can be long, turnover is swift, and slurping noodles under the blue sky on benches or the terrace beside the parking area is part of the unique experience here. Lunch costs around a modest ¥500, making it a popular choice as the first stop on Kagawa udon tours; because the handmade noodles are finished once sold out, an early visit is recommended.
