Freshly fried katsu poured over with curry sauce once more: Showa-era rice curry unchanged since 1981

  • Famous freshly fried katsu curry
  • Double-poured curry sauce
  • Fried shumai is also popular
  • Full meal for under ¥1,000
  • Great for lunch in a student town
  • Solo-diner friendly
  • 14-seat U-shaped counter
  • Showa-era atmosphere since 1981

Tucked away in a Jimbocho alley, Rice Curry Manten has preserved the atmosphere of a Showa-era diner since 1981. Its signature style features nostalgic, thick curry loaded with minced meat poured over rice, topped with freshly fried crispy katsu, and then poured over once more with curry sauce. Popular toppings also include fried shumai dumplings—which many regulars find hard to choose between and the katsu—and deep-fried red wieners, alongside self-serve fukujinzuke pickles available at the tables. The 14-seat U-shaped counter quickly fills with local students and office workers, but the turnaround is fast thanks to the efficient teamwork of the staff. The entire shop is non-smoking, payment is cash only, and prices stay under ¥1,000 even at night, making it a reliable spot when you want a hearty meal on your own.
